Hari Kraf Kebangsaan 2008
A carnival showcasing the beauty of Malaysian handicraft is currently underway at the Kompleks Kraf at Jalan Conlay until the 7th April 2008. Our exposure to local handicrafts is frequently limited to those cheap items you find sold at stalls near tourist attractions, some of which are not even made in Malaysia. Malaysian handicraft is so much more than that, as can be seen at this expo where artisans from all around Malaysia congregate to display their works of art.
It’s amazing to see how under the right hands, regular discardable items can be miraculously transformed into these stunning art pieces.

The abstract shapes there make great photography subjects…
At one of the many temporary tents at the Kompleks Kraf, live demonstrations of the artisans at work let you see several items take shape step by step.
We spent quite some time at the Mah Meri Nipah folding demo being fascinated by how easy it is for them to weave the Nipah leaves into these.
The grasshopper Yazeed got one of the ladies there to make for him – it took less her than 5 minutes to create this from a single strand of Nipah
