Tamu Besar Kota Belud 2009: The horses & horsemen

The most anticipated event at the yearly Tamu Besar Kota Belud is the mid afternoon horse riding show by the locals nicknamed the “cowboys of the east”. That day, we arrived at the padang rather early and so had ample time to find the perfect spot and to capture the preparations for the show.

After 1pm, most of the riders and horses were ready on the field under the hot midday sun all in their colourful traditional attires.

At around 1.30pm the announcement was made that the show would finally begin at 2pm. Unfortunately even an hour later the riders were still waiting patiently on their horses and the spectators all around the field under the scorching sun.

Finally just after 2.30pm the show got under way and what a spectacular show it was.

The show was a colourful kaleidoscope of 101 fully dressed horses and riders on the field displaying well planned and executed formations and was definitely worth the long wait under the sun.

After the main show there was a smaller event in front of the main grandstand where the riders would ride their horses at full speed across the field and attempt to pick an item off the ground with a pole. Being at the further end of the field allowed me to try out the panning technique with camera for the first time for these shots – ok ok aje lah for a first attempt.
