Borneo Sevens 2009
The third leg of the iRB Asian Rugby Sevens series took place in KK last weekend seeing teams from 12 nations competing for the coveted cup as well as the top six Asian rankings to qualify for the World Sevens series.
The Malaysian team was unable to repeat their victory at the recent Brunei Sevens after an early loss to the Hong Kong side by 22-17 in the semi finals.
Japan beat Korea by 10-7 to gain a spot in the finals against Hong Kong, the winner of the Shanghai Sevens.
The finals between Japan and Hong Kong was a feast of tries which saw Japan emerging as overall Cup champions beating Hong Kong 38-14.
In the Plate championship China beat Philippines 31-0 while the Bowl championship saw Chinese Taipei beating India 19-0.
The only teams in the concurrent women’s rugby tournament were from Thailand and India with Thailand winning the cup after beating India a whopping 41-0.
Malaysia which did not take part in the first of two ranking events in Shanghai in September, saw its ranking slip to the seventh place after their loss to Korea in the bronze medal match resulting in the team missing out on qualifying for the World Sevens. The six countries qualifying for the World series after the Borneo Sevens are in the order of ranking Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.
The Borneo sevens also saw invitational clubs competing with the seemingly Fiji vs Fiji finals being won by NS Wanderers which beat Davetalevu by 7-10.
Our personal favourite, the team from Guam who paid out of their own pockets for this debut at the Asian Rugby Sevens series placed seventh after theirĀ 24-7 win against the better seeded Thailand. No doubt with more experience under their belt, they’ll be a force to reckon with by next year.
Good luck to Chris and the rest of the Guam boys for the East Asian Games in Hong Kong next month and hope to see all of you here again next year bigger, faster and stronger
And many thanks to the folks at the Ultimate Rugby Sevens for using these pictures on their Rugby Sevens official website update on the Borneo Sevens

Shah,
pic #10 tu mcm diorg buat ala2 AB’s Hakka ke..?
Pinky: Itu Indonesian Hakka lerrr hehe.
